REFORM GROUP SUGGESTS TAX AUDIT FOR EVERY MEMBER OF CONGRESS

"The Rangel ethics case illustrates why every Member of Congress should submit to an annual tax audit from the IRS," said Rachel Rodriguez, Director of Clean Up Our Congress.Org.

"An annual tax audit would reassure the public that all Members of Congress are paying their fair share of taxes and also ensure that Members of Congress properly understand the tax burdens they impose on other Americans" continued Rodriguez.

"To help restore public confidence in government, we urge candidates for Congress to support this modest step towards enforcing within Congress the laws these Members impose on other Americans.  It's a fundamental question of whether we have a Rule of Law in our country." she concluded.

Clean Up Our Congress.Org seeks Congressional ethics reform by asking candidates for Congress to support three key reforms.  In addition to the mandatory annual tax audit, the group urges candidates for Congress to pledge, if elected, never to become a paid federal lobbyist, and to support a change in congressional ethics committee rules so members of just one party cannot block ethics investigations or ethics-related subpoenas.

AN IRS TAX AUDIT FOR ALL IN CONGRESS
SAYS "CLEAN UP OUR CONGRESS.ORG

"A mandatory annual IRS tax audit for Members of Congress would help them more fully understand the tax laws they impose on other Americans" said Rachel Rodriguez, National Director of the group "Clean Up Our Congress.Org

The newly formed group will be recruiting candidates for Congress across the nation to take three pledges to help reform Washington D.C.

1. The "IRS Tax Audit" Pledge.

A pledge to support a mandatory annual IRS tax audit for every Member of Congress.

The best way to reform the tax code may be to help Members better appreciate how it really works.

2. The "No Lobbyist" Pledge.

A pledge, if elected, never to become a paid federal lobbyist.

Members should be focused on serving the public, not on a future career as a lobbyist.

3. The "Unleash Congressional Ethics Committees" Pledge

A pledge to support a change in House or Senate Rules to allow 50% of those ethics committees to launch ethics investigations.

Members of one party in Congress should not be allowed to block an ethics investigation.

"If enough candidates take these pledges and win, we could help end a culture that tolerates far too much corruption in Washington," said Rodriguez.

"Our goal is to build a Congressional  ethics reform movement led by principled candidates for Congress and grassroots activists," she said.

"We could have a real impact."

A recent Rasmussen poll reports that 84% of voters consider unethical conduct and corruption in Congress to be a top concern.
